In the book of John, Pontius Pilate had to determine if Jesus was guilty or not. So this is the conversation that occured…
So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king.” For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37)
In the next verse, Pilate asks Jesus a very profound question that stumps people to this day.
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” (John 18:38)
I don’t want to try to answer this question, because it has as many different answers as there are people in this world. However, I do wonder, how do we know if someone is telling the truth?
I got some great news from two people and I was so excited.. They had changed their minds about something.
The pessimist in me thought it was too quick of a turnaround. I knew my sister had spoken with them about any grudge they may be holding about an issue that was supposed to be water under the bridge.
The communications that I received from both people were quite lovely, very sincere, and wanting to know more about the subject. I couldn’t ask for anything nicer. It was just what the doctor ordered!
Still, the pessimist in me thought that maybe they had to fake it until they made it. And that’s okay if someone has to do that too, because it means they are trying. In the long run, trying can be, well, very trying.
However, I think I shall prefer to see the glass as half full and be an optimist and take them at their sincerity. Pessimism is a terrible assumption.
What is truth? Not telling a lie and seeing the glass as half full.
