I know that Juneteenth was yesterday on June 19th, but I had to fill in for someone at the last minute so I didn’t have time to write anything. However, I had been working on four different flyers to put up around my apartment building, since the most they were able to do to celebrate was say, “All Offices Closed”.
Juneteenth is when we celebrate what is, in my opinion, the greatest day of freedom in our country’s history. It was the final end to slavery. There were 3.5 million slaves on June 19, 1865 when the final holdout, Texas, was told to just plain stop it. 3.5 million people were freed from being whipped, treated like they were lesser, women were no longer raped, pedophiles could not prey on slave children anymore.
What greater freedom could a person ask for or a countrty be more proud of? Yes, we have July 4th, but that was a bunch of white people sitting around being pissed off at the king and claiming their independence. They weren’t being abused as they were when the Emancipation Proclomation was signed.
