Memorial Day always falls on the last Monday in May, and that is today–May 26, 2025.
Memorial Day is not a happy day, it is a day of mourning. It marks the period where we honor the soldiers who have crossed the rainbow bridge. Some in battle, some by a natural death but hounded by PTSD, some by suicide.
There have been so many young widows and widowers, so many women who were terrified of getting a telegram during World War II. There are soldiers from the American Revolution and the Civil War who also deserve to be remembered.
However, in my opinion, the ones who deserve the most attention are the ones who are buried with no name. They are the unknown soldiers who fought so fiercely that their names are lost.
Three soldiers are buried in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one from World War I, another from World War II, and a third who fought in Korea.
These men were all someone’s son, perhaps a husband, father, brother, or uncle. Perhaps one had an unusual talent, like they could play the harmonica or juggle. Did any have a Southern accent or a Northern accent? What did they want to be when the war ended? A minister, teacher, mechanic?
These three men represent the true sadness of Memorial Day. They signed up with a name and were assigned a serial number, they fell down anonymously after bravely fighting for peace. This could happen to any of the women and men fighting today.
We need to pray that these brave people do not die without a name. We need to push for better conditions at VA Hospitals, housing for people right when they come out of service, education, job training, mental health treatment, free healthcare.
These people put their beating hearts–their lives on the line and many end up homless or in disgusting hospitals? That is an abomination. More and more money is being put into defense, when that money should be put into helping our veterans. No veteran should die by their own hand because they can’t get the help they need!
